According to the Wonder Weeks Book and App Althea is now entering ‘The World of Categories’. During and after this sixth leap (a sort of mental growth spurt):

Your baby is now able to recognize that certain objects, sensations, animals, and people belong together in groups or categories. For example, a banana looks, feels, and tastes different than spinach, but they are both food.

…Once your baby acquires the ability to perceive and experiment with categories, he begins to understand that he can classify his world into groups. It will dawn on him that certain things are very much alike…Naturally, this new understanding will not happen overnight. He must first get to know people, animals, and objects well…Your baby’s comprehension of a category is the result of a lot of research that he conducts much as a real researcher would…He observes, listens to, feels, tastes, and experiments with both similarities and differences. Your baby works hard at his investigations. The Wonder Weeks, Chapter 8. Pg. 211

+ So we’ve been reading lots of non-fiction board books on different topics. This ‘My First Farm‘ book that I featured in THIS post is by far her favourite. She likes to take it off the shelf an try turning the pages herself. I placed the Holztiger Pig and Sheep alongside it for her to explore, she is particularly interested in the pigs tail. When I am sat with her we look through the book together and sing some songs related to the animals like  ‘Old MacDonald’, ‘Baa Black Sheep’ and ‘Mary had a little lamb’.

+ She is obsessed with this wooden music box that her paternal Grandad gave her. She likes to hold it and shake it whilst it plays. We started winding this up for her at bedtime but she loves it so much that I’ve put it out on her shelf this week.

+ This traditional montessori jigsaw is a little advanced for her at the moment but the knob is great for grasping and she enjoys taking it out, she just isn’t ready to put it back in yet. I’m happy to leave this one out for now as it doesn’t frustrate her.

+ I personally love manipulating these Manhattan Toy Baby Beads, Althea mostly enjoys putting them in her mouth. They’re just the right size for her little grasp. I actually wish I’d found these earlier, they would have been a perfect addition to her shelf at around 4 months.

+ This final activity I only put out when I’m with her as I didn’t want her falling into it. I simply placed some natural wooden teething rings on a Mug Tree. She enjoys taking them off and mouthing them. I will probably rotate this out at the end of the week and wait until she’s more interested in putting the rings back on. I will leave the DIY IKEA Stacker with Wooden Bangles from last week out for her to practice this skill on.

What is your little one enjoying at 37 weeks?
